According to a recent article by ICSC, there are 51 major retailers that have their sights set on brick-and-mortar. Coresight Research also predicts there will 1,856 store openings throughout the year.
These growing chains are planning to open more stores and expand their physical footprint throughout 2023:
16 Handles
A New-York based frozen yogurt shop with 30 locations will expand its market to Boston, New Jersey and Florida this year.
Academy Sports + Outdoors
The sports retailer plans to open 16 stores this year, and 80-100 in the next 5 years.
Aldi
The discount grocery store chain is growing its regional footprint with 13 openings planned in the Gulf Coast.
Aritzia
With a net revenue growth of over 58% in the last year alone, the apparel brand is planning to open 8-10 stores a year in the US through 2027.
Babies R Us
WHP Global will open a Babies R Us store in New Jersey this summer. After the brand closed its stores a few years back, WHP hopes to reinforce the company’s physical footprint and ignite its original branding.
Ballard Designs
The home decor and furniture company opened its fourth Texas-based store. This is Ballard’s 18th location nationwide.
Barnes & Noble
With over 600 outlets across the US, the book retailer will focus on expanding it’s footprint with 30 new stores this year. The new stores will include a bookstore-inspired design to encourage customers to linger.
Boot Barn
The boot retailer will increase their growth by 40 stores this year, including expansions into New York, Connecticut and Maryland.
Casey’s
The convenience store will add 350 locations throughout the next three years.
Chicken Salad Chick
The fast-casual restaurant is planning to expand in Texas in 2023. The company just opened its 24th restaurant in the state.
Condado Tacos
With plans to expand outside the Midwest, the fast-casual chain has already open locations in various markets throughout the US.
Conn’s HomePlus
The home store recently opened new stores in Georgia and Florida, bringing its number of stores to 168 across 15 states.
Dollar General
19,000 stores and counting throughout the US – Dollar General continues to grow its brick-and-mortar footprint at a rapid rate. The retailer plans to open 1,050 stores this year.
Five Below
In an effort to double its sales this year, the retailer will triple its total store count to 3,500 by the end of 2030.
Floor & Decor
The retailer operators 191 warehouse stores across 36 states and just opened its sixth Arizona store last month.
Forever 21
The fast-fashion retailer will open three outlet stores in Atlanta, Florida, and California this year.
Foxtrot
The growing hybrid corner store, cafe and delivery market has seen extensive brick-and-mortar growth over the last few years, and has made plans to venture into both existing and new markets in 2023.
Gucci
The luxury store chain has continued to grow its store count over the past month.
Guitar Center
The company has recently opened its 300th store, and will open an additional location this September.
Homesense
The home retailer has opened stores in Virginia and Florida over the past two months.
Honey Birdette
A recent mall opening in New Jersey has brought the retailer to a total of 11 stores.
Kohl’s
Following along with a common retail theme of smaller-format stores, Kohl’s will open 100 new stores with improved experiences for customers. The retailer also plans to expand its Sephora at Kohl’s concept to all locations, hitting 850 this year.
Lowes Foods
The full-service supermarket brand will add five stores to its footprint, bringing its total count to 81.
McDonald’s
The fast-food chain is planning for significant growth in 2023, with 400 new locations. The company wants to enhance its digital, delivery and drive-thru channels – all of which physical elements are essential.
Meijer
The department store retailer will open two new brick-and-mortar locations this year, marking over 500 stores for the brand.
Moxies
With a new rebrand, the upscale restaurant and bar chain will add locations in Arizona, Florida and Boston.
Nick the Greek
A new location in California has allowed the fast-casual restaurant’s footprint to grow to 50. The company plans to continue this growth with 30 additional restaurants this year.
Nordstrom Rack
The discount retailer will add six new stores to its roster this year.
Primark
The international clothing retailer has made plans for 10 new US locations in 2023. This will nearly double their US footprint.
Publix
After breaking ground on its first Kentucky location, the grocer has also acquired properties for three additional stores in the state.
Rally House
The sports-based retailer will open three new stores in Oklahoma.
REI
The outdoors gear retailer already has three stores under development, with plans to open these locations in the new year.
Ross Dress for Less
The retailer is slated for significant brick-and-mortar growth over the next few years. The company wants to reach 2,900 location – currently they have 2,000.
Rutter’s
With 50 convenience stores underway in Delaware, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, the company plans to add significant value to their footprint.
Salad and Go
The quick-service chain wants to grow from 80 to 125 units by the end of the year.
Sam’s Club
The warehouse club plans to open 30 new stores over the next few years. The company will also build five distribution and fulfillment centers. This is Sam’s Club first expansion in years.
Showcase
The Canadian retailer just opened its 41st store in the US.
Smoothie King
The fast-casual health food chain will open 100 locations in 2023, including new drive-thru units.
Sprouts Farmers Market
The natural and organic food market is slated to expand their Tennessee, Arizona and California markets.
Tap 42 Craft Kitchen + Bar
The restaurant chain plans to open its 10th location in Florida this year.
Target
New stores and remodels are on the horizon for Target this year. The company will open 30 new locations and create additional space for omnichannel growth with 200 remodels.
Tillys
The apparel chain will open 15 new locations this year, bringing its total count to 250.
Trader Joe’s
The growing grocery store chain expanded their total store count by adding new locations in Connecticut and Utah this year.
VinFast
The electronic vehicle manufacturer will open new showrooms and service centers throughout California.
Wegmans
After just recently opening its 115th store in Virginia, the grocery store chain will expand further into its NYC market.
Wetzel’s Pretzels
After recently opening its 400th location, the food chain has made announcements of 60 new stores in its pipeline, most of which will be malls and airports. The company will also grow its food-truck fleet.
Whole Foods
The grocery store chain plans to open 30 new stores this year, this number is up from the 11 locations they opened in 2022.
Yesway
Raising $190 million in equity helped the company refocus its initiative on brick and mortar. The convenience store brand is set to build 28 stores in 2023.
