Retail traffic up YOY post-holiday season, significant gains compared to pre-pandemic numbers

Tuesday, Jan 25, 2022

Retail traffic visits in the last two weeks show higher levels than directly after Christmas. With rising COVID rates, average weekly visits have performed better in the last two weeks than in the six weeks before that, according to Placer.ai data. Although there was a minor dip in traffic, levels from 2019 and 2020 show that overall performance was still up.

Two standout retailers in the post-holiday shopping season were DICK’s Sporting Goods and Best Buy. DICK’s saw visits up over 13% compared to the same weeks in 2019 and 2020, and Best Buy visits were up 6.9%.

Luxury stores also saw significance gains compared to 2019 and 2020 numbers.

The lengthened holiday season and shift in overall shopping behaviors seems to be affecting retail in a post-Christmas setting as well, with an added boost in traffic levels.

These metrics showcase that the post-holiday shopping period is stronger than brick-and-mortar retailers may have initially expected, and will continue to increase in the coming months.
